12-055 Kansas National Guardsman to receive free car from Cars 4 Heroes

Tech. Sgt. Dorothy Westergren, a member of the Kansas National Guard’s 190th Air Refueling Wing, who recently returned home from a six month deployment to Afghanistan, will receive a free car from Cars 4 Heroes Saturday, May 5 at 2:15 p.m., at Forbes Field, located at 5920 SE Coyote Drive, Topeka.

Westergren, who has served 31 years in the military, returned home from deployment to find that her car was inoperable.  Reliable transportation is critical to Westergren, who drives more than 80 miles roundtrip each workday.

"I am very grateful for the generosity of this amazing organization," said Westergren.  "Returning home and not having a car to get me back and forth to work was quite overwhelming.  Their generosity removes that worry and allows me to focus on reintegrating with my family and community."

Cars 4 Heroes is a not-for-profit organization that provides free basic transportation to disadvantaged individuals and veterans. Founded as Cars 4 Christmas in 1996, the organization gives away more than 350 cars in the Kansas City, Wichita and Omaha areas.

"This is the second 190th Air Refueling Wing member Cars 4 Heroes has helped in the last year," said Col. Ron Krueger, commander of the 190th ARW.  "We are grateful for their partnership with our organization and the compassion they have for current and former members of the military.  They are a first-class organization."
