Letter From Maj. Gen. Lee Tafanelli, Kansas adjutant general

Fellow Kansans,

The Kansas National Guard learned that the Topeka Capital-Journal will publish a story based on information received from various unknown and unidentified sources. A headline released by the Topeka Capital-Journal on Friday indicates the information obtained might place the Adjutant General's Department, the Kansas National Guard and some individuals in a negative light.

We respect the freedom of the press and hold dear each and every constitutional right, including that of free speech. As members of the National Guard, we trace our roots to the organized militia regiments formed in the Massachusetts Bay Colony in December 1636. We have defended these rights for over 380 years and will continue to do so, to ensure they are available to all citizens of Kansas and of the United States of America.

We have an important job to do. It's a new year and we will not begin it by rehashing old information and we certainly will not litigate actions necessary to maintain the good order and discipline of our force in the court of public opinion. When the Kansas National Guard learns of misconduct it deals with it fairly and impartially. Moreover, state and federal law prohibit us from commenting on specific personnel actions and ongoing investigations. We will continue to look forward, focus on the missions we are tasked with and continue to serve our state and nation with distinction.

The leadership in the Kansas National Guard is proud of the service that our over 7,000 Soldiers and Airmen provide to our state and nation every single day, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.  We will not allow the rich legacy of the Kansas National Guard, the value we provide to our state and nation, nor the sacrifices our soldiers, airmen and their families, friends and employers make on a regular and routine basis to be overshadowed.

To the Soldiers and Airmen of the Kansas National Guard and their families, hold your head high and be proud of your service. Stay focused on the mission and stay ready. The outstanding work accomplished through your efforts and because of your dedication is appreciated and held in high regard.

We are grateful for the continued support of our elected officials; our local, state and federal partners and stakeholders; and the citizens of our great state.

Thank you for your continued support.

Proud to serve,

Lee E. Tafanelli
Major General, Kansas National Guard
The Adjutant General of Kansas
