Jane Welch
Director

Jane Welch is the director for the Public Affairs Office of the Adjutant General’s Department where she has worked for more than 20 years. 

 

Maj. Matthew Lucht
Deputy Director

Maj. Matthew Lucht joined the Adjutant General’s Public Affairs staff in December 2009. Currently he is assigned to the 184th Wing, McConnell Air Force Base, as the Public Affairs Officer. Prior he had been a member of the Civil Engineering Squadron at the 190th Air Refueling Wing, Kansas Air National Guard.

Lucht spent nearly 10 years in the broadcast industry working for several network affiliates across the country. Before coming to Kansas in 2005, Lucht worked for the CBS affiliate WINK-TV, Fort Myers, Fla., covering news events, including Hurricane Charlie that devastated Southwest Florida. Before joining the Adjutant General’s Department public affairs staff, Lucht worked at the ABC affiliate KTKA-TV in Topeka, Kan., as their chief photographer.

Lucht earned his Masters of Liberal Studies at Washburn University and his Bachelor of Science degree in mass communications from Moorhead State University, Moorhead, Minn.

Steve Larson photoSteve Larson

Steve Larson is a graduate of Washburn University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. Stints as an advertising copywriter and in a professional photography studio helped to develop his writing and photography skills. His journalism training was further honed over the course of 10 years with the Topeka Metro News in Topeka, Kan., first as a reporter, and later in desktop publishing.

He has worked in the Public Affairs Office since September 1998. His responsibilities include writing news releases and features, taking still pictures, video recording, developing graphics, maintaining sections of the Adjutant General's website, doing layout for the Plains Guardian and the Annual Report, writing speeches and developing a variety of other materials for the Public Affairs Office.

Sgt. Maj. Jeremy Byers
Command Historian

Sgt. Maj. Jeremy Byers joined the Adjutant General’s Public Affairs Staff in January 2015. Currently, he is assigned to the 2nd Combind Arms Battalion, 137th Infantry Regiment as the battalion communications chief. Prior to this, he served in the 2nd Battalion, 130th Field Artillery and the 1st Battalion, 127th Field Artillery.

Byers has taught college-level U.S. and military history in Kansas and Missouri for the past 12 years. He has 23 years of military service, including the last 12 years in the Kansas Army National Guard, and has served five tours of duty overseas. Most recently, Byers worked as an ROTC instructor in military science and military history at Truman State University in Kirksville, Missouri.

Byers earned a Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Sciences degree at the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire, and a Master of Liberal Arts degree in military history at the University of Kansas.

1st Lt. Briell Zweygardt
Public Affairs Specialist

1st Lt. Briell Zweygardt is currently assigned to the 184th Wing, McConnell Air Force Base, as the deputy public affairs officer. Prior to this assignment, she had been a member of the Logistics Readiness Squadron at the 190th Air Refueling Wing, Kansas Air National Guard. Zweygardt enlisted with the Kansas Air National Guard in December 2011 and was commissioned in November 2018.

She earned her bachelor’s degree in entrepreneurshipat Kansas State University in May 2017.

Zweygardt joined the Adjutant General’s Public Affairs Office in 2018. Her responsibilities include writing articles, photography, videography, developing graphics, maintaining and developing several social media platforms, and developing a variety of other materials for the Public Affairs Office.

Bailey Hittle
Media Production Specialist

Bailey Hittle is a 2020 graduate of Kansas State University with a bachelor’s degree in agricultural communications and journalism, and a minor in animal sciences and industry. Hittle spent time as a communications team member at the Kansas Water Office, and is the owner of a small design company that helped to develop her communications skills.

Hittle joined the Adjutant General’s Public Affairs Office in November 2020. Her responsibilities include writing articles, photography, videography, developing graphics, maintaining and developing several social media platforms, and developing a variety of other materials for the Public Affairs Office.
