22-018 Proclamation will honor men and women of the Kansas National Guard’s 184th Wing

The Kansas Air National Guard has been a valued presence in the Wichita community since 1941, when the 127th Observation Squadron was stood up for federal service.

To honor those 81 years of service to Wichita, the state and the nation, Wichita Mayor Brandon Whipple will sign a proclamation designating May 17 as 184th Wing Appreciation Day in the city of Wichita. The proclamation will be read at the Wichita City Council meeting on Tuesday, May 17 at 9 a.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers, 455 N Main St., 1st Floor.

“I have had the privilege of serving with the men and women of the 184th Wing,” said Col. Jason Knobbe, commander, 184th Wing. “They are professional, dedicated and always excel in every mission. This proclamation is a fitting tribute to the years of service the Kansas Air National Guard has given to Wichita, the state and nation.”

Over the decades, the wing has been deactivated and reactivated and seen many changes of name, aircraft and missions -- fighter bombers, jet fighters, bombers and air refueling tankers. In its current mission, the 184th Wing provides intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance; battlefield command and control; and cyberspace operations to the U.S. military and allied forces worldwide.

Through all those years, the men and women of the 184th have responded to numerous disasters that struck Wichita and surrounding areas. They have also contributed to Wichita’s economic wellbeing, pumping millions of dollars into the city’s coffers both as airmen and as members of their community serving as doctors, plumbers, teachers, builders, mechanics and host of other professions. Their service also extends to such roles as sports coaches, mentors, artists and other community leaders.
